Quinoa4Med Goals

The Quinoa4Med consortium pursues three main objectives:

  1. Breeding and introducing multipurpose quinoa varieties that are better adapted to saline, marginal soils in the Mediterranean region, withstand climate change, reduce post-harvest processing and enrich plant diversity for sustainable agricultural management.
  2. Establish waste-free production chains for quinoa that provide affordable gluten-free food for people suffering from gluten intolerances and other non-food products (animal feed, biochar, cosmetics).
  3. Advice, support and networking opportunities for stakeholders.

Quinoa4Med addresses the priorities of the UN 2030 Agenda (SDGs), the European Green Deal and national strategies or action plans of the Maghreb countries and will provide innovative impulses for a future-proof agricultural policy through 'best practice' examples. The basis is the quinoa breeding lines developed in the project and adapted for arid locations, with the help of which current cultivation systems are diversified, total yields stabilised or increased, soils regenerated and the food and income security of small farmers improved.
